DhiFM disciplined over protest coverage Print E-mail

By JJ Robinson, Minivan News: The Department of Information has docked five points from DhiFM’s broadcasting license for eight contract violations, following its coverage of the protest outside the president’s residence on 28 January. Police accused DhiFM of airing live interviews with people calling for others to join the protest and overthrow the government through violence. DhiFM claimed plain clothed officers entered the station’s premises and demanded the broadcast be terminated, raising the ire of advocates for media freedom. Read more...

 
Fahala Saeed sentenced to pay Ghassaan Maumoon MRF 5000 for defamation Print E-mail

Civil Court has ruled that an article written by Fahala Saeed on the Sandhaan’s 29 June 2009 had defamed the character of Ghassaan Maumoon. Court also sentenced Fahala Saeed to pay Ghassaan Maumoon MRF 5000 (USD 390) as compensation within a month.Read more...

 
TVM asked to ‘take measures’ against poll staff Print E-mail

The Maldives National Broadcasting Corporation (MNBC) has asked Television Maldives (TVM) to investigate its poll on religious freedom and take measures against those responsible. Speaking to Minivan News today, Ibrahim Khaleel, managing director of MNBC, said the board has asked Mohamed Asif, deputy director general of MNBC currently in charge of running TVM, to look into the matter after opposition Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP) accused the government of attempting to establish other religions in the Maldives. Journalists ask for government subsidies Print E-mail

The Maldives Journalist Association (MJA) has sent a letter to parliament asking for media subsidies to balance the “fragile” state of the country’s media.The letter urged parliament to provide the subsidies “in a sensible way” to “vitalise” Maldivian journalism, in order for it to continue its “important role” of holding the government accountable. Several newspapers have closed down while others have reduced staff numbers and salaries, it said, as a direct result of the government moving its advertisements to an in-house gazette. DhiTV interested in commercial arrangement with public broadcaster TVM Print E-mail

Privately-owned television station DhiTV is among six parties to have expressed interest in a joint venture arrangement with the ailing Maldives National Broadcasting Company (MNBC), which broadcasts rival channels including Television Maldives (TVM) and Voice of Maldives (VOM). DhiTV CEO Yoosuf Nawaal said the station had approached MNBC and offered to buy TVM’s land for Rf100 million (US$7.78 million), “and they would pay us a monthly rent of Rf1 million (US$77,800).”  Read more...
