Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) strongly condemns the violent attacks carried out against three journalists on last night.
The first attacked was carried out against Maldives Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) deputy editor Aishath Liza and reporter Aminath Saani, by throwing a packet filled with thinner at them according to sources. MBC reports that it had caused body injuries including their faces. Second attack was carried out against RajjeTV news head Ibrahim Waheed (Asward) in artificial beach area. He was attacked with an iron rod, causing serious head and face injuries. RaajjeTV has reported that the injured journalist was treated at ADK hospital, and now been transferred to abroad as he is in a very critical condition.
Prior to these attacked, they have been receiving threats to attack from social media groups and other means of communications, and these cases were been informed to the police according to Rajje Tv and MBC.
These incidents have now been brought to the attention of foreign media organizations, Maldives Broadcasting Commission, and Maldives Media Council.
MJA believes that these attacks have been directly targeted to the journalists.
These attacks can be described as violent attempts to violate press freedom. There should not be any barriers to prevent journalists covering rallies and protests.
We call on the responsible authorities to investigate these issues and take responsible actions. There can be preventive measures taken by the media organization after discussing it with among them, to lower the risk of journalists being attacked.
